‘Secondary Cause of Death’ by Peter Gordon
Tuesday, 16th May saw the opening night at the Key Studio of ‘Secondary Cause of Death’, the second play in the Inspector Pratt trilogy written by Peter Gordon. It ran for six performances, and it was lovely to see many audience members returning for the further adventures of the hapless, inept policeman.
This was a complex, twisting story set in 1939 on the eve of World War II. In the intervening three years since the events of ‘Murdered to Death’, Colonel Charles Craddock has inherited Bagshot House and transformed it into a small, select hotel for the more ‘discerning visitor’. Now the guests are gathering for a murder-mystery evening, organised by Miss Cynthia Maple, sister to amateur sleuth, Joan, seen in the first play, ‘Murdered to Death.’ Inspector Pratt suddenly arrives with some grim news for the Colonel, and it is not long before mayhem follows. The body count rises at an alarming rate!
Characters include a Polish Count, an ATS Captain, a flamboyant thespian, the housekeeper and cook but are they all who they claim to be? Pratt, in his own idiosyncratic way, attempts to unravel events but only seems to add to the chaos with his incompetence and slaughter of the English language!
It was a pleasure to welcome two new members to the cast and company: Jo Pilkington and Chris Butterly Temp. There were many laughs along the way during rehearsals, the set painting beforehand and for the get-in at the theatre, although that was a long, hard day!
Thanks to everyone who was involved, both on stage and behind the scenes. The production was enjoyed and well-received by the audiences. Now work commences on the third and final instalment of the Inspector Pratt investigations, ‘Death By Fatal Murder’, to be performed in October of this year.
